Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Harvard Geographic Society (HGS)?

HGS exists to sponsor activities of a geographical nature for the general student body, stimulate interest in the science of geography, and provide a variety of activities for members to enhance their educational and social experiences while attending Harvard University.

What activities do you do?

Our activities include mini-geography bees (with cool prizes!), GIS tutorial workshops, Harvard Map Collection tours, and the Harvard Geography Bee (for middle school students). We are also in the process of planning a "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" event, a campus-wide geography bee, a scavenger/puzzle hunt, Geography Awareness Week, and also a tutoring program for local Boston/Cambridge-area middle schools.

Are you approved by the student activities office?

Yes.

How often are your meetings?

We usually have meetings every month. Each of our meetings will feature the mini-geography bee, in which participants can win prizes for correct answers to geography questions.
